SOUTHEAST CONTEMPORARY

February 16 – June 1, 2024

The Museum of Arts and Sciences presents its annual group exhibition, showcasing professional artists from the Southeast who are influencing the direction of American contemporary visual art. 2024 Featured artists will display works ranging from large-scale paintings and drawings to ceramic sculpture and include: James Enos (GA), Carol Prusa (FL), Amy Gross (FL), and Nadia Stieglitz (SC). The “Night with the Artists,” a special evening reception, will be Thursday, March 7, 2024.

Through initiatives like SOUTHEAST CONTEMPORARY, the MAS identifies and advances developing artistic talent plus acquires relevant and important works of art. Each year, four to six professional contemporary artists are invited to display works ranging from painting to ceramic sculpture. Nearly 60 artists have been featured since the project began in 2013 – many of whom are achieving national recognition.

Complementing the exhibition each year is a special evening reception or a “Night with the Artists,” during which the artists present Gallery Talks to art patrons and regional scholars. Attendees often make personal connections with the featured artists and then follow them as they flourish on a national scene.

An important goal of the SOUTHEAST CONTEMPORARY project is to increase awareness of the high-quality Master of Fine Art graduate programs and the exceptional artistic talent being produced in the Southeastern region. The MAS has worked to grow this into a coveted and valuable experience for professional artists, and one recognized throughout the region as a highly sought-after exhibition opportunity.

The project not only advances the careers of our region’s most promising emerging professional artists but also influences the collecting of local patrons and engages the community in powerful discussions about visual artistic expression. As a nationally accredited institution in Georgia, MAS strives to strengthen its Permanent Collection by acquiring significant works by new and diverse Southern voices. More than 40 works of art have been acquired through the SOUTHEAST CONTEMPORARY project.
