2013 Instrument Petting Zoo The Macon Symphony Orchestra and Macon Symphony Youth Orchestra joined the Museum of Arts and Sciences in presenting the 2013 Instrument Petting Zoo — an afternoon of music. The event was expanded to complement the Museum’s Wild Music: Sounds and Songs of Life exhibition.

This event offered attendees the opportunity to watch local musicians demonstrate their instruments and then try the instruments themselves. They also were able to participate in an interactive performance by the Macon Symphony Youth, learned about “The Science of Sound” with Mercer University professor Dr. Matt Marone, made their own musical instrument at the arts and crafts center, and met many of the residents from the Museum’s Mini-Zoo (snakes, bugs, mammals and birds, including the Museum’s unofficial mascot, Georgia the Cockatoo).

Young visitors were be able to “pet” a variety of instruments and had the “Passport” activity book they receive stamped at each station of the Petting Zoo. Children were encouraged to collect all of the stamps as they met each family of instruments, which included flute, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, violin, viola, cello, double-bass, percussion, and harp.

The musicians demonstrating their instruments represented the Macon Symphony Orchestra, Mercer University, and the Macon Symphony Youth Orchestra, which entertained the crowds four performances throughout the day.

The 2013 Instrument Petting Zoofree admission — was held at the Museum on Sunday, March 3, from 1:30 to 5:00 pm.
