In recognition of Black History Month and beyond, the Museum of Arts and Sciences featured African-American Voices in the Permanent Collection from January 21 to April 29, 2012.
This exhibition included the works of several Macon artists of African-American descent in the Museum’s permanent collection, also a part of the 55 Years: Experiencing Art from the Museum Collection exhibition. The featured work of African-American artists in Macon reflected the diversity of their interests, the skill visible in their endeavors, the influence of their environment, and unique qualities of their artistic passion. This exhibition saluted the art of:
- Keith Bankston, a Macon native, who worked prodigiously, but died at a young age leaving a haunting promise of talent.
- artist and sculptor Beverly Buchanan, who lived in Macon for several decades before realizing national acclaim for her work.
- Chi Ezekwueche, who is recognized not only for her artistic statements, but her dedication to support the arts in Macon.
- Rudy Mendes, whose vibrant work demonstrates the vision of a dedicated artist and teacher.
- Wini Mcqueen, who is widely recognized for her surface textile designs and is represented with works funded by a Georgia Council for the Arts’ Artist Initiated Grant.
Suzanne Jones Harper, Executive Director, spoke about African-American Voices in this interview—also below—with 41-NBC’s Coreen Savitski.
